Important copyright information. First time visitor? Please read!

Purchasing arrangements of songs that are under copyright is complicated, and licences can take a while to obtain, especially if the song is being cleared in a country for the first time. Unfortunately, every country has its own copyright laws and sometimes a song is managed by different copyright agencies in different countries, is priced differently and has different rules about what I can charge as an arranger (if anything).

For this reason, it’s only possible for me to give quotes online and directly sell songs where I control the copyright – in most cases, these will be public domain songs or original songs. In nearly all other cases, we need to apply to the copyright owner of the song in the country where the performers live for permission and a quote.

This is the case for all arrangers, and also Sweet Adelines International and the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Please contact me before contacting the copyright owner – if you order directly from them, I may not be able to legally collect any fee for my work. Copyright owners generally do not pay arrangers for works they sell direct to the public.

Viva Las Vegas
(Elvis Presley)
This is a fun, energetic song that your audiences will absolutely love. It starts out with vocal stylings which match the original instrumentation, then fills out into a full arrangement as the song progresses. To manage the rangy melody line, the melody moves between voice parts, with the lowest voice singing some of the verse. A terrific opportunity to showcase your singer with the lowest voice!

This arrangement is regularly performed by Frenzy! quartet, and was sung by Brindabella Chorus in their international championship package in Las Vegas in October 2017.

Explanatory notes

Clearance

  • Direct from me means that I can legally sell you the arrangement; either it’s in public domain, it’s an original work (I wrote it) or I have been authorised to sell by the copyright owner.
  • Contact me means that the work has been cleared in at least one country. I will assist you in gaining clearance for the song.
  • Not cleared yet means that the arrangement has not yet been cleared in any country. Permission to arrange needs to be granted – this can take a couple of days or several months.

Country cleared

This lists which country the song has already been cleared in. If it says “Public Domain”, clearance is not required.

If the song you’re interested in has already been cleared in your country of residence, this is most likely good news. Generally, once a song has been cleared, you only need to apply for a licence to photocopy (that term may vary from country to country). These requests are usually handled quite quickly, as the copyright clearing house already has permission for my arrangement of the song, and usually doesn’t need to go back to the actual copyright owner to gain additional permission for the song to be used.

Public domain

If you are considering a song that you believe is in public domain, please read the Public Domain information page to learn more.

Sheet Music Plus

Sheet Music Plus are a digital music seller owned by Hal Leonard. They are now allowing small publishers to sell music via their site, which creates some great opportunities.

The ArrangeMe series allows arrangers to create new arrangements from a specific list of popular music. The arranger receives 10% of all sales, but can also charge a work for hire fee for the initial creation of the new work.

SMPPress allows composers and arrangers to publish original works or arrangements of public domain music through their site. I set the price, and receive 40% of the sale price. In most cases I would be better compensated by selling direct from here, but SMPPress gives my work exposure to a wider audience. Larger ensembles may still do better to purchase from me directly.
